The effectiveness of a garden irrigation system heavily depends on the strategic placement of the sprinklers. When positioning an impact sprinkler, avoid placing it too close to walls, fences, or trees, as these can obstruct the water spray and create uneven coverage. To maximize the coverage, select an open area in the center of the region you intend to water. Ideally, this should be a level ground, as sloped areas can cause water to pool in lower regions, leading to some parts of the garden being overwatered while others remain dry. Ensuring proper clearance from obstacles will help in achieving a uniform distribution of water across the entire area. It’s essential to assess the terrain to guarantee that the sprinkler has an unobstructed range of motion to spray water efficiently.

Most impact sprinklers come with an adjustable arc feature, which allows users to control the extent of the spray pattern. Proper adjustment of the sprinkler arc ensures that the water is directed exactly where it is needed, without overspray onto areas such as sidewalks, driveways, or non-planted sections. For round or circular lawns, a full 360-degree rotation is typically appropriate, but for rectangular or narrow garden spaces, restricting the arc to a smaller range will prevent water from being wasted. Depending on the model, you can manually adjust the sprinkler's arc by rotating a dial or lever. Fine-tuning this feature guarantees that no water is wasted, and the surrounding areas are not unnecessarily watered.

The spray radius of your impact sprinkler determines how far the water will reach, which directly influences the efficiency of your irrigation system. A sprinkler with an adjustable radius gives you the flexibility to customize the range based on the size of your garden. For smaller gardens, reducing the radius will concentrate the water in the desired area, preventing water from spraying onto non-planted areas. Conversely, for larger lawns, expanding the radius will help cover a greater area without the need for multiple sprinklers. Most impact sprinklers have a simple control mechanism to adjust the radius, often via a knob or screw that alters the force of the water being ejected, controlling its reach.

The water pressure supplied to the impact sprinkler plays a crucial role in its performance. An optimal pressure ensures that the sprinkler operates efficiently, distributing water evenly without waste. Too little pressure can result in weak water streams, which may leave parts of the garden under-watered. On the other hand, high pressure can cause excessive misting, which is not only inefficient but also leads to water wastage due to evaporation before the water hits the ground. It’s important to ensure that the water pressure falls within the manufacturer’s recommended range for your specific sprinkler model. Using a pressure regulator will help maintain consistent pressure across all sprinklers, promoting efficient watering throughout the garden.

When using multiple impact sprinklers, the spacing between them is crucial to ensure that all areas of the garden are adequately watered. Sprinklers should be placed so that their spray patterns overlap slightly, which helps in eliminating dry spots and ensures that water is distributed evenly across the garden. The general guideline for spacing sprinklers is to place them at a distance that allows for about 50-75% overlap of their spray radius. For example, if a sprinkler has a 10-foot spray radius, positioning them 8-9 feet apart will allow for sufficient overlap. For larger areas, using more sprinklers with appropriate spacing can effectively water a wide area, preventing any section from being over or under-watered.
